SEO has two halves. On-page SEO is everything on your own website that helps Google understand and trust your pages. Off-page SEO is everything elsewhere on the web that tells Google other people vouch for you. Local businesses need both. Use this checklist to see where you stand.
On-page SEO checklist
1. Every page targets one clear search
Decide what each page should rank for — for example "interior designer in Anna Nagar" or "website development company in Chennai" — and write the page for that search. One page per service beats one long page that lists everything.
2. Titles and descriptions
- A unique page title of about 50–60 characters, with the main phrase near the start and your brand at the end.
- A meta description that reads like an advert: what you offer, where, and why to click.
3. Headings and content
- One H1 per page that says what the page is about.
- Clear sections with H2 and H3 headings, answering the questions customers actually ask — prices, timelines, areas served.
- Original text. Copied or thin pages rarely rank.
4. Internal links
Link related pages to each other with descriptive text ("see our SEO plans" rather than "click here"). It helps visitors and helps Google find and weigh your pages.
5. Images
Compress images (WebP is ideal), give them descriptive file names and alt text, and set their width and height so the page doesn't jump while loading.
6. Speed, mobile and security
- Most local searches happen on phones. Test your pages on a real phone, not just a laptop.
- Check speed with Google PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest issues first.
- Use HTTPS everywhere.
7. Structured data
Add schema markup — a LocalBusiness block with your name, address, phone and area served, plus breadcrumbs and service details. It helps search engines connect your website to your business.
8. Sitemap and Search Console
Publish an XML sitemap, verify your site in Google Search Console, submit the sitemap and check the coverage report for pages Google can't index.
Off-page SEO checklist
1. Google Business Profile
For "near me" searches this matters more than anything else. Pick the right primary category, list your services, add real photos, post updates regularly and reply to every review. Read more in our Google Business Profile guide and plans.
2. Consistent name, address and phone (NAP)
Your business name, address and phone number should match exactly everywhere they appear: your website, Google, Facebook, Instagram and directories.
3. Local citations
List your business on the directories people in India actually use — such as Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART — and on industry-specific sites. Keep the details identical to your Google profile.
4. Reviews
Ask every happy customer for a Google review, with a direct link or QR code. Never buy or fake reviews — it breaks Google's rules and customers can tell.
5. Backlinks from relevant sites
Links from local news sites, associations, suppliers, partners and industry blogs tell Google you're trusted. A few relevant links beat hundreds of spammy ones, which can get a site penalised.
6. Social profiles
Active Instagram and Facebook pages don't directly raise rankings, but they build brand searches and give customers another way to confirm you're real.
How long does SEO take?
On-page fixes can show within a few weeks of Google re-crawling your pages. Off-page work compounds over months. Rankings depend on your competition and on Google, so be wary of anyone who guarantees a #1 position. What you should expect is steady progress and a clear monthly report.
